Ships were not a good place to go for a walk, and to sail for pleasure, because of the great dangers of the sea.

Famous Pirates Curiosities

Some were famous for turning from prisoners into pirates. Others did so for various reasons. Because of their personality they became famous and their quirks and peculiarities are recounted.

Originality despite being pirate

They went down in history for being famous and unique for their personality.

The sea can be very rough, but it also allows for extraordinary experiences. The freedom enjoyed by some pirates attracted many adventurers to piracy as a way of life.

Famous Pirates and their extravagances

Successful pirates

Curiosities of the most famous Pirates

Some Pirate Captains were very successful and this allowed them to indulge their whims. Some of them were very fashionable, dressed elegantly or with a lot of color. Others performed authentic theatrical representations. And there was one who tried to educate his men, and tried to teach them to appreciate good music. Each one of them has also gone down in history for some of this.

Some Pirates were very special

A ship anchored near the coast could be attacked by Buccaneer hunters.

The dreaded silhouette of a pirate ship

Anchoring their ship in the dark, next to a deserted island, they felt safe but there could be a surprise.

There were some pirates who stood out for their elegance, culture, initiative, etc. Some were initiated in piracy for greed, hunger or love. Others simply for hobby, adventure or honor, as was the case of some corsairs.

They have gone down in history, some as elegant or cultured, others as cruel, original, romantic, etc.

The elegant, handsome and stylish Pirate

Always in calico

Jack Rackham ,Calico Jack.

Famous among other things for the way he dressed, a pirate of fame, daring and adventurous. He loved to dress as a calico. He always dressed this way, both the shirt and the pants. The calico or indianas were cotton fabrics printed on one side, with one or more colors.

El Pirata teetotaler, alcohol out of the question

A pirate who only drank tea

Bartholomew Roberts was an atypical pirate. He only drank tea, not a drop of alcohol. He was also elegant, tall and good-looking. While his crew was getting pretty drunk, he stayed out of their parties.

There is no other known case of a famous pirate who did not drink alcohol.

Pirates with a strong personality

The most theatrical pirate

He prepared a whole show with fire

The famous Blackbeard, mounted a whole spectacular of light and fire. His splendid and enormous corpulence for the time helped him a lot. His tall stature, almost 1.95 meters, was already impressive. Added to that was his long black beard, with curls, braids, and colored strips.

In his hat he wore slow wicks, which he lit, before boarding. Creating a cloud of smoke around his face. The crew members of the attacked ships saw him as a sinister being that appeared almost out of nowhere.

With all this setup, showing up in the middle of combat, with at least 6 guns, surrounded by smoke, was impressive.

The cultured pirate

He was well prepared for his time

Blackbeard the pirate was not just any pirate, who became successful by chance. He was a pirate, quite cultured, who knew how to read and write. Nothing usual in the pirates of the time.

He was very intelligent, and put on quite a performance at every boarding. A whole spectacle that joined his impressive and tall figure. This created real fear among his victims, who soon gave in and agreed to his demands.

He was caught by the fans

He was forced to be a pirate, and became famous.

John Roberts, better known as Bartholomew Roberts, was captured when his ship was boarded by pirates.

They invited him to join the crew. He refused and but the pirates forced him to go with them. This allowed him to get to know their way of life. Although he shared everything, he liked much of it. He had the support of the Captain, who ended up giving responsibilities. But an event that happened made him have to choose,

It was actually the crew who made the first decision, choosing him as a replacement for the old captain. And he ended up being the captain of the ship, when the latter died. And he became the most successful pirate, alternating the African route with the Caribbean.

Pirate woman for love

He ran away with his love and turned to piracy.

Anne Bonny, fell in love with the elegant Jack Calico. They both stole a ship from the port, and she fled with him, becoming a pirate. For several years, she was a pirate in the company of her love.

Until they were captured, four years later, they boarded a multitude of ships.

Disguised as a man

He was a soldier and pirate and even served in the war.

Mary Read disguised herself as a man and enlisted as a soldier fighting in several battles. She sailed to America, on the voyage her ship was captured by Calico Jack, and she joined his crew.

He was able to keep his secret, until Anny Bonny, Jack’s wife, realized that he was not a man.

Drunk as a skunk

They were caught when they were drunk

Calico Jack was captured, when he was cornered by a warship and could not resist. The reason was that the crew was totally drunk in the hold, and had no strength to even stand up.

Only the two women and one pirate in the crew put up any resistance.

Summary: The elegant, the teetotaler, the most theatrical, the cultured, the one who took a liking to piracy, the pirate woman who disguised herself as a man, the ones who got drunk as a skunk, etc.
